Break the Sabbath

  1. To do things on Sunday that are seen as inconsistent with keeping the Sabbath day holy — such as shopping, working, or seeking out recreation and entertainment.

Members are taught to set Sunday apart from the rest of the week by attending church, resting, and spending time with family rather than doing ordinary business or leisure. What exactly counts as "breaking" the Sabbath varies a lot from family to family: for some it means no shopping or dining out, for others no swimming, sports, or homework. Because the standard is more cultural than spelled-out, it's a frequent source of good-natured debate — and mild guilt — among members.
