Devotional

  1. A special, scheduled short worship gathering — an opening prayer, a hymn or musical number, and a spiritual message — often built around an invited speaker, who may be a General Authority or other prominent figure.

A devotional overlaps heavily with a fireside, and the two are often used interchangeably; a devotional tends to be the more formal or scheduled of the two (a campus devotional, a Christmas devotional). Church-owned schools such as BYU hold regular devotionals where a General Authority or invited guest addresses students, and the First Presidency's annual Christmas Devotional and periodic worldwide devotionals for young adults are broadcast Churchwide. Members also use the word for a personal or family devotional — a brief time set aside for prayer, scripture, and a spiritual thought.
