Greenie

  1. Affectionate slang for a brand-new missionary, especially one still in their first area during their first weeks in the field.

"Green" here means inexperienced, as in unripe. A greenie is typically the junior companion of a more seasoned missionary called a trainer, who shows them the ropes. In many missions there are lighthearted traditions tied to finishing one's first transfer as a greenie — anything from a small celebration to burning an old tie — marking the point where a missionary is no longer considered brand new.
