Speaking in Tongues

  1. A gift of the Spirit to speak or understand a language one has not learned; in modern practice, often associated with missionaries learning languages.

Early in Church history speaking in tongues was more dramatic; today members most often cite the gift in how quickly missionaries learn the languages of their missions. Its companion is the interpretation of tongues.
