Dear Jane
- The name of a letter sent to a female missionary that indicates that the guy that was waiting for them is no longer doing so.
- Can also be used when a male missionary sends a letter to the girl that was waiting for them and asks them not to.
In essence, a dear Jane is a breakup letter. Although the most common form is a basic handwritten note, people have also been known to also send wedding announcements. It might seem odd that phone calls are not used in this process but to help the missionaries focus on their work, only letters/packages (and sometimes email) are allowed to facilitate communication between a missionary and their family/friends. The exception to this is the two calls a year (on Christmas and Mother's Day) when every missionary calls home to speak with their family over the phone.
