Mountain Meadows Massacre

  1. The 1857 killing of about 120 members of an Arkansas emigrant wagon train by a local Latter-day Saint militia (with some Paiute participants) in southern Utah.

One of the darkest events in Church history, the massacre occurred amid war hysteria as U.S. troops approached Utah. The Church has acknowledged the tragedy and expressed profound regret; militia leader John D. Lee was later tried and executed. A memorial stands at the site.
