Sacrament Talk
- A talk a member is asked to give during sacrament meeting, usually five to fifteen minutes on a topic handed out by the bishopric.
Because the Church has a lay ministry and no professional preachers, the Sunday sermons are delivered by ordinary members — including teenagers and even small children — who are assigned a subject a couple of weeks ahead. The experience is a shared cultural rite: the nervous asking ("Brother So-and-so, would you be willing to speak?"), the last-minute preparation, the quote from a general conference talk, and the obligatory "in the name of Jesus Christ, amen" to close. Speakers are typically invited by a member of the bishopric and given a theme rather than choosing freely.
