1978 Revelation
- The 1978 revelation, received by President Spencer W. Kimball, extending priesthood ordination to all worthy male members and temple blessings to all worthy members, regardless of race.
From the mid-1800s until 1978, the Church did not ordain Black men of African descent to the priesthood or allow Black members to receive temple ordinances. The 1978 revelation ended that restriction and was canonized as Official Declaration 2. In 2013 the Church published an essay disavowing the past racial explanations that had been given for the restriction.
