Handcart Companies

  1. Groups of pioneers who crossed the plains to Utah in the 1850s pulling their belongings in handcarts rather than using wagons.

The most famous — the Willie and Martin companies of 1856 — started late and were caught by early winter storms in Wyoming, where many died before rescue parties reached them. Their story is central to pioneer heritage and to modern youth "treks."
