Plural Marriage

  1. The 19th-century practice in which some Latter-day Saint men were married to more than one wife.

Taught as a commandment for a time and practiced openly from the 1850s, plural marriage was officially ended by the 1890 Manifesto under President Wilford Woodruff. The Church has not practiced it since and today removes the membership of those who do; present-day polygamist groups are not part of the Church.
