Temple Dedication

  1. A ceremony in which a completed temple is formally dedicated to God, after which only members holding a temple recommend may enter.

Held after the public open house, the dedication centers on a dedicatory prayer offered by a member of the First Presidency or an assigned apostle, and includes the Hosanna Shout — a unified congregational shout of praise. It marks the point at which a temple passes from public access to recommend-only use. A rededication follows a major renovation, and meetinghouses are dedicated too, more simply.
