Baptistry

  1. The room, in a meetinghouse or temple, that houses the baptismal font where baptisms are performed.

In a meetinghouse the baptistry is a small room built around a tiled font, used for baptizing new members and children reaching the age of accountability. In a temple the baptistry is dedicated to baptisms for the dead: the font rests on the backs of twelve sculpted oxen, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and members (often youth) are baptized by proxy on behalf of ancestors.
