Investigator

  1. An individual who is learning more about the Church, normally with the intention of deciding whether or not they would like to become a member.
  2. An individual who is being taught by the missionaries.

"Investigator" was the standard term for many years, but the Church has since moved away from it, encouraging members and missionaries to speak instead of "friends" or "those being taught." The label covers anyone taking the missionary lessons and considering baptism.
