Nauvoo

  1. The city in Illinois that the Latter-day Saints built up in the early 1840s and were driven from in 1846, before the pioneer trek west.

On a bend in the Mississippi River, Nauvoo grew into one of Illinois' largest cities and the site of an early temple. Joseph Smith was killed nearby in Carthage in 1844, and the Saints left under Brigham Young. A rebuilt Nauvoo Temple was dedicated in 2002.
