Beliefs & Doctrine

Nephi

  1. A prophet near the start of the Book of Mormon who led his family and followers (the Nephites) after they left Jerusalem around 600 BC — the first and best known of several men named Nephi in the record.

This first Nephi obtained the brass plates from Laban, built a ship to cross the ocean to the Americas, and began the record that became the Book of Mormon; his name marks its first two books, 1 and 2 Nephi. Later prophets in the book also bear the name Nephi.
